Who can issue an Apostille?

DFAT is the only body in Australia that is authorised to issue Apostilles. An Apostille confirms the authenticity of the document's signature, seal or stamp and the authority of the person or organisation that issued it. DFAT issues Apostilles through the passport office in each state and territory in Australia.

What documents can be Apostilled by DFAT?

DFAT will only Apostille an original Australian Government issued document or a document that has been notarised by a Notary public.

Original Australian Government issued documents that DFAT can Apostille are:

  • AFP National Police Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • Court Document
  • Death Certificate
  • Divorce Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate (excluding ceremonial certificate)
  • Primary or Second School Document
  • Australia Single Status or Record of No Result Certificate
  • University or TAFE Academic Degree
  • University or TAFE Academic Transcript
  • ASIC Certificate of Registration of a Company
  • Certificate of Residency Issued by the ATO
  • Document already Notarised by an Australian Notary Public
  • Fingerprint Report issued by ACIC (excluding digital certificate)
  • NAATI Translated Document that meets the specific DFAT Requirements
  • Translated documents by an official National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) provided certain requirements are met.
  • Police Certificate issued by an Australia State or Territory (excluding digital certificate)

If your document is not one of the above documents then it will need to be notarised before being Apostilled by DFAT. Please visit Swift Notary for notarisation of your document.
