How do I get an Apostille in Australia?

If you have an original document issued by an Australian Government department (e.g. Australian birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, citizenship certificate etc) and you will be sending the original overseas, then DFAT can Apostille the document without being first notarised by a Notary Public. Refer to our guide on Documents that can be Apostilled without being Notarised.

DFAT issues Apostilles through the passport office in each Australia State and Territory capital city. An appointment is required to be made in advance or the documents can be sent to DFAT by post.

The current wait times for a DFAT appointment in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are lengthy:

  • Sydney: 6 weeks
  • Melbourne: 3 weeks
  • Brisbane: 3 weeks

The DFAT processing time for an Apostille is 3 business days. The timeframe for DFAT to issue an Apostille is longer if the documents are posted by mail to DFAT.

How Swift Apostille can help

Swift Apostille can have your document Apostilled by DFAT. No appointment required.

Documents that DFAT can Apostille

Original documents that DFAT can Apostille are:

  • AFP National Police Certificate
  • Australian Birth Certificate
  • Australia Citizenship Certificate
  • Australia Court Document
  • Australia Death Certificate
  • Australia Divorce Certificate
  • Australia Marriage Certificate (excluding ceremonial certificate)
  • Australia Primary or Second School Document
  • Australia Single Status or Record of No Result Certificate
  • Australia University or TAFE Academic Degree

  • NAATI Translated Document that meets the specific DFAT Requirements
  • Translated documents by an official National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) provided certain requirements are met.

When is Notarisation required?

If you intend to only send a copy of a document issued by an Australian Government department (e.g. Passport, Australian Drivers Licence etc) overseas or a document not issued by an Australian Government department, then you must have the document notarised by a Notary Public before DFAT will issue you with an Apostille. Please visit Swift Notary for notarisation of your document.
